Stevenage Striders head coach Chris Leigh has been celebrating this week after hitting the big 50. The milestone has nothing to do with age but refers to his splendid achievement in reaching a half century of marathons.

On Sunday Chris travelled to Great Ponton near Grantham with his wife Sue – who was running her 27th 26.2 miler – to take on the Ponton Plod.

The route was across a mixture of road, trails and rutted fields with Chris and Sue having to negotiate the course using a set of instructions.

Chris and Sue finished in a creditable time of 7:03.

In other news Hayley Stenning travelled to south west London to take on the Richmond Park half-marathon.

After a strong start Hayley started to struggle with a niggling issue with her hip and achilles but she showed large reserves of character despite the pain as she dug deep to finish in 2:34:05.

The 5km (3.1 mile) free-event for all took place on Saturday morning with Striders out in force.

In Ellenbrook fields Tom Sclanders carried on his streak of improvement when he finished in 19:23, coming 5th out of 204 runners.

Ken Marshall travelled north for the Pocket Park run finishing 67th out of 212 runners in 26:48.

In Stevenage 319 runners took part in the run on Saturday in good conditions.

Karl Hudson was first Strider home in 22:15 finishing in 22:15. Second was Fran Levy returning from an injury in a time of 25:51 in 99th position. Eilish Hislop ran a personal best in 26:05 (107th) closely followed by Russ Andrews (26:27, 112th) and Esperanza Castro (26:29, 113th).

The following Striders also ran:

Tony Castro 27:40 135th; Kirsten Jarvis 29:23 165th; Gary Wallace 29:40 168th; Sandra Howes 31:15 196th; Ally Brown 32:56 222nd; Rachel Hall 38:53 284th pb; Suzanne Davidson 38:58 285th; Julie Kempson 39:04 287th; Tracy Norris 42:44 295th; Sandra Shirley 44:55 308th.
