Two senior athletes from Stevenage and North Herts AC made the UK Athletics Challenge Final at Eton.

Neil McLellan was fourth in the javelin (68.68m) and Louise Shortland came fifth in the pole vault (3.51m).

Later the same night at Eton, Dan Poulton ran 1:56.89 in his race in the British Milers Club Grand Prix final.

A number of club members competed for Hertfordshire at Hendon in the Southern Counties under-15 and under-20 matches.

Helping the county to third place of 18 counties in the older age group, Moe Sasegbon was fourth in the high jump with a personal best of 1.65m and sixth in the 400m hurdles (69.03).

Bunmi Awokoya put the shot 10.51m for fifth and sisters Loren and Bethan Scales each were eighth in their specialities - hammer 33.70m and triple jump 9.91m respectively.

Cameron Webb made the final in the 200m, eighth in 23.05, while Josh Moss clocked 2:09.51 in his heat of the 800m.

In the youngest age group, three members took part in the county team which finished eighth in the 17-team match.

The early events took place in wet conditions which affected all the athletes; Renee Hector managed one legal throw of her four, finishing in eighth place (22.76m).

Alex Gates in the long jump managed all her four jumps, reaching 4.59m in two of them for ninth place.

Daniel Gardner was the most unfortunate, his pole slipping in the 'box' in his first pole vault attempt which led to him withdrawing from the competition.

Two members competed at the England Athletics Combined Events championships at Birmingham the previous weekend.

Their event was the under-17 women's heptathlon. This comprises seven individual events which score points (set in the international tables), and these points are totalled to decide the order of the finishers. From a start list of 32, 23 completed the gruelling two days.

Chloe Vernon-Hamilton, setting three personal bests as well as a new heptathlon total score best, was fifth overall.

Her performances were 80m hurdles 12.82 (pb); shot 8.06m; high jump 1.59m (pb); 200m 27.82; long jump 4.70m; javelin 25.86; and 800m 2:24.21 (pb) for a total score of 4,112 (pb).

Moe Sasegbon, competing in her first heptathlon, was 13th.

Her performances were 80m hurdles 12.93; shot 7.54m (pb), high jump 1.59m; 200m 28.09; javelin 20.79m (pb); and 800m 2:36.08 (pb) for a total points score of 3,801.

On a lovely sunny Bank Holiday Monday, seven Spartans took to the airfields of the Pathfinder Squadron.

This off-road marathon in Cambridgeshire covered many of the old airfields from World War II.

Times: Mike Newbitt 4-56; Carol Paul 4-58; Dave Paul 5-22; Kevin Lawlor 5-27; Mark Sanders 5-55; Michaela Sanders 5-55 and Dave Carter 6-30.

Two days earlier, Newbitt completed the Smugglers Trod off-road event in North Yorkshire in 5-20.

Roger Biggs said that Sunday's Longford Marathon lived up to its motto - 'the friendly marathon in the heart of Ireland'.

In a slow run as he recovers from an Achilles injury, Biggs finished in 5-50:48.

Peter Scrowther of the North Herts Road Runners took part in the Nene Valley 5k last Wednesday at Ferry Meadows Park near Peterborough.

The race constituted the Cambridgeshire County Championships over 5k and a strong field turned out.

Pete finished 38th in 18:26, just three seconds off posting a new personal best time.
