Fairlands Valley Spartans won medals in the Hertfordshire 10k road race championships run over the tough St Albans course on Sunday morning.

In the veterans' event, Tony Osborne won the silver medal in the men over-60 category with 48:27.

Jim Brown took bronze for men 50 plus with a time of 40:48 after a tight finish with only 16 seconds separating second and fourth places.

The race was included in an open 10k race on a route which included a couple of floods and some grinding climbs.

First Spartan finisher was Paul Maguire, 36th out of the 410 finishers in 40:47. Richard Sidlin (46:47) and Ian Chappell (48:29) both set new personal bests.

Four Spartans tackled the Halstead Marathon in Essex on Sunday.

Sharon Crowley and Frances Ridgway both achieved new season's bests. Sharon ran her fastest marathon since 1993 with a time of 3-55:34 and Frances finished in 3-40:32.

Mark Beasley ran the race in 3-55:04 while Robert Hardy took 4-09:02.

The Spartan globetrotters were in action again, this time in the Prague Marathon.

Times: Roger Biggs 3-37:58, Carol Paul 4-10:13, Michaela Norton-Lay 5-12:30, Mark Sanders 5-16:59.

Simon Bell was racing on Grantham track at an RAF event on Thursday. He was second in the 5k event with a brilliant time of 16:13.

Simon and wife Annette both ran a 5k race in Carlsbad, California recently - he ran 16:24 and Annette 19:45.

* Around 300 runners will be racing round Stevenage next Thursday evening (May 25) as Spartans host the first Midweek Road Race League fixture of the season.

As well as providing marshals, the club hope at least 50 members will take part in the 10k race.

* Two veterans from North Herts Road Runners journeyed to Peterborough to compete in the Eye 10k on Sunday.

Pete Sibbett ran well to finish in 37:22 followed by club colleague Duncan Hooker in 41:14.

Mike Mello was the sole member of the club that tackled an undulating St Albans 10k the same day and finished in 43:20.

Kevin Holt finished a creditable ninth at the Stratford Triathlon.

Holt completed the three disciplines in 1-03:33, knocking more than three minutes off his time last year. The event comprised a 400m swim, 23k cycle and a 5k run.

* FVS TRI were represented at the Eton Supersprints by Jeremy Lintott and Robin Snook who finished within seconds of each other over the 400m lake swim/20k bike and 5k run.

Jeremy was 79th overall in 1-05:36 and Robin 83rd in 1-05:55 from the 764 finishers.

Mickey Summers continued to earn ranking points in the fourth race in the MKCA Abbeygate Summer Series cycling race over a one hour plus five laps format (30 miles).

With a three-man break staying away, the bunch sprint was for fourth place. Mickey finished seventh in the bunch sprint for 10th place in the race and one more ranking point.

FVS TRI runners also competed with John Burgess finishing 17th out of 251 runners in 32:43 at the Benfleet Bluebell five miler and Bradley Baynham finishing in 1-34:40 in the Frinton Half Marathon.
