Athletics: Stevenage & North Herts pipped in Southern League opener

Stevenage & North Herts AC were pipped by a point in their Southern League opener on home turf.

Nathan Gardner and Michael Stocker won the men's pole vault, while Anne Rees and Shannon Rapacchi came out on top in the women's event.

James Goss, Steve Feely, Lauren Aldridge and Libby Taylor ensured a clean sweep in the hammer, while Freddie Reilly and Joel Evans won a 400m hurdles double.

Connie Andrews won the women's B string, as Rebecca Pickard and Andrews took a sprint hurdles double.

Peter De'Ath won the men's 200m and 400m, while Elior Harris and Josh Roache won the men's high jump strings.

Daniel Gardner won the men's long jump and Peter Keefe took the discus, as Taylor and Alisha Levy landed a women's double.

Neil McLellan claimed the men's javelin honours, but SNHAC were edged out by Eastbourne.

A squad of 40 finished third in the Eastern Young Athletes League meeting at Peterborough.

Will Lawler and Joel Evans both clocked 14.2 in the under-17 100m hurdles, with Evans winning the 400m, Lawler the high jump and Oliver Kay the discus.

Henry Radford won the under-15 discus and javelin, whiel Tyler Wannerton took the 800m and George Adams the pole vault.

Under-13 Callum Fairey landed a 200m/800m double, as Bobby Pitman took the discus, while Poppy Radford (javelin), Aimee Taylor (pole vault) and Shanumi Akinfenwa (high jump) had wins for the girls.
