Stevenage and North Herts veterans were out in force for the British Masters Indoor Athletic Championships.

The competition was at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre over the weekend and was open to athletes aged 35 and above in five-year age bands.

Nearly 600 competitors were involved with local athletes coming away with eight medals between them.

Gordon Daborn, in the men's 70-74 age group, managed fifth place in the 60m (10.24) and followed that up half an hour later with second place in the 60m hurdles (13.28).

In the 60-64 age group, Godfrey Leak had a busy day with shot put sixth (10.08m), discus third (33.79m) and the heavy weight throw fifth (14.06m).

The discus and heavy weight throw take place in a field outside which gives the throwers a chance to take part in more than one event.

Joylyn Saunders-Mullins, in the women's 50-54 age group, picked up a second in shot put (9.01m).

Her husband Tim managed third in the shot (8.74m) and fifth place in the heavy weight throw (10.04m).

John Mayor, in the 45-49 age group, showed good early season form.

He won the 60m hurdles (9.31) and followed up with second place in the long jump (5.54m) on Saturday.

On Sunday morning, he was third in the high jump (1.65m) and finished off by winning the triple jump (11.27m).
