Forty-nine Spartans in action around Stevenage
Despite the rain 49 Spartans raced round Stevenage in Thursday evening’s handicap race over five kilometres.
Matt Gill was first to finish, beating his December time to record a new personal best (PB) time of 24:30, 2:45 better than handicap (the race sees runners given structured start times based on personal bests so in theory everyone should finish at the same time).
Iris Hornsey was the winning female and second overall in 29:05, newcomer Rachel Payne finished third in 29:06 and Nikki Collins fourth in a PB of 27:59.
Cally Glading was just four seconds behind in a PB of 24:34, an improvement of 53 seconds.
Barry King was second male in sixth overall in a PB of 24:41, while Ian Larman was seventh in 22:18.
Simon Bell was the fastest runner on the night finishing in 17:54, Andrew Gardner was second in 18:18, Grant Ramsay third in 18:32, while Jamie Drackford (19:31), Todd Gray (19:45) and Christopher Westcott (19:49) all also finished inside 20 minutes.
Tracy Pez was fastest woman on the night in 22:02 with Cally Glading second in 24:34 and Monica Read third in 26:31.
Shaw Pye was second in 33:19 as a good turnout helped Fairlands Valley Spartans move up the cross country league in Sunday’s event at Watford.
Simon Jackson, sixth in 33:55, and Andrew Patterson, ninth in 34:22, were also top 10 finishers.
Jo Laing shrugged off a recent set back to lead in the Spartan women, 45th overall in 37:49.
Grant Ramsay was eleventh out of about 2,000 finishers in the tough Grim 8 Off Road Challenge event near Aldershot. He finished in 57:11. Tracy Pez was 510th in 1:19:52, Tracey Jackson 684th in 1:22:51 and Andy Jay 730th in 1:24:58, among others.
Six Spartans travelled to the Scout Hut in Shephall View on Sunday for a 26,2mile run organised by the 100 Marathon Club. Roger Biggs finished in 5:29:09, Robert Hardy in 5:47:30, Sharon Crowley in 5:57:23, Sue Leigh in 5:57:23 and Dave Carter in 7:39:55.
Pauline Hardy ran the 12 mile option in 3:10:59.
Shaw Pye competed for his home club Amazing Feet in the third fixture of the Birmingham Cross Country League Division Three at Wyken Croft Common, Coventry. After a hard fought battle he secured first place in the race in 34:16.
Jeannette Collins ran in the final race of the East Herts and Essex Country League. The course was 4.37 miles and she completed it in 45:10 despite a full length splat into the mud.
Fairlands Valley Spartans’ Presentation Evening will be on Friday 4th February.
