FVS TRI were top local club in the invitation Mulligatawny Mud Challenge hosted for the second year by North Herts Road Runners.

Eight clubs were invited to enter 15 runners with the first three men and three women scoring for the respective teams.

FVS TRI men were third overall and led home by Simon Hall, closely followed by Gavin May, with James Brooks producing a storming run to clinch the third scoring spot.

Their ladies finished second overall with Sam Tophill leading in Lesley Dutton and Jackie Perry.

Helen Shulver was the first member of FVS TRI to complete a triathlon in 2006, improving her 2005 time by more than four minutes in the New Year's Day Edinburgh Sprint Triathlon. The 400m swim, 11-mile bike and three and a half mile run were completed in 1-25:27 to give an overall finish of 135th from 350 starters (14th in senior women).

At the Buntingford 10-mile road race, Gavin May was first home for the club with an excellent 12th overall in just under the hour. In the ladies' race, Lesley Dutton won second vet 45 to bring home another cup for the club.

Mark Simpson had another good run to finish third overall in the Pirton Off Road 5k.

Thirteen Fairlands Valley Spartans ended 2005 in style at Little Downham, near Ely, with the New Year's Eve 10k. The contrast with the previous day's snow, ice and slush was incredible, although there was a fairly stiff headwind between about 2k and 8k.

Three more Spartans were in Italy for the Marathon di San Silvestra at Caldera di Reno. First to finish was Mike Newbitt in 3-41:21, while Carol Paul completed the event in 4-04:46 and Dave Paul 4-13:45.

Nine Spartans started the New Year with a squelch by taking up North Herts Road Runners' invitation to the Mulligatawny Mud Challenge.
