There were fireworks on Tuesday night when the Invitation Cup final of The Comet Stevenage Sunday League took place at the County Ground in Letchworth.

Division Three side Granby St George began with a three-goal lead against Stevenage Fencing from the Premier Division.

However, within 35 minutes of the kick-off, the overall scores were level.

Firstly, Jim Bywater netted before a brilliant Marc Holmes strike over Matt Stanton from 30 yards made it two and then a handball gave Holmes his second as he despatched the ball into the net from the penalty spot in style.

Stanton kept the scores down and Granby came out better in the second half than in the first to stem the flow.

Their chances were improved when Fencing goalkeeper Darren Croucher was sent off for handling outside the penalty box. Simon Braine came off the bench to go between the sticks.

Tragedy struck for Granby as, with just 20 minutes remaining, the head of defender Michael Forecast intervened to send a looping header past a stranded Stanton and into the top corner for an own goal winner.

There were dreadful late scenes as around 30 people were involved in a brawl in the last minute of the game to spoil the night.

Instigators Ross Braine (Fencing) and Paul Tully (Granby) were sent off and it could have been more as punches were thrown from all directions.

It was a disappointing way to end a competition which is an exciting one and a real leveller.
