A former Stevenage man is making waves on dry land.

Tim Spears was recently awarded the title of British landsailing champion for class five. His trophy is being displayed in the window of Marshall Trophies in Stevenage Old Town.

The 32-year-old, a former pupil of Barnwell School in Stevenage, now lives in London.

He started landsailing when he was seven-years-old and is following in the footsteps of his father David and uncle Stuart Mason (formerly a world champion at class three).

Tim started the new season well by winning his first race for his home club at the Anglia Regatta in late October.

He was fourth at the Brean Regatta, near Weston-super-Mare, more recently. The next competition event is in March 2007.

His local club, the Anglia club, is based at Bassingbourn barracks near Royston. The highly successful club, including Tim, competed at this year's world championships at Le Touquet in France.

The Anglia club hosts a 'come and try' day on the first Sunday of every month. You can visit their website at www.anglialandsailing.co.uk or the British federation website at www.bfslyc.org.uk

This country will be hosting the European championships at Hoylake on the Wirral in September next year.

Landsailing yachts can travel up to three times the wind speed and with no breaks.

So it is definitely not a sport for the faint-hearted!
