Ladies' football round-up

Langford Ladies comfortably won their first away game this season on Sunday when they beat SE Combination rivals Whitehawk 2-1 in the first round of the FA Women's Cup.

Goals from Faye Rees (16 minutes) and Emma Tune (60 minutes) put Langford the two goals ahead that their performance deserved.

Indeed, but for some wayward finishing, the score would have been greater before a late strike from a rare Whitehawk attack gave Langford a nervous end to the game.

Laveena Betts' telling passes troubled the Brighton side's defence throughout and although rarely troubled, keeper Jaide Stewart dealt well with any attacks that the solid back four failed to snuff out.

Reds squad: Jaide Stewart, Nikki Day, Sheree Oliver (Sophie Bailey 68m), Laura Bright, Debbie Styles, Hanna Garatt-Kirk (Emma Tune 52m), Laveena Betts, Shelley Forster, Laura Shearwood, Naomi Lyons, Faye Rees.

Arlesey Town Ladies upset the odds to beat league leaders Beds and District in the late, late show.

The hosts were unbeaten in league matches for the last two seasons, while the Blues had been beaten 3-1 by the same opposition earlier in the season in the FA Women's Cup.

It was in the 21st minute that Arlesey went ahead when a cross delivered by Sarah Tayler from the right was headed in by Marie Clarke.

Beds and District correctly had a goal disallowed for hand ball.

After the break, the home side equalised in the 75th minute and then goalkeeper Amie Fage saved a penalty a minute later awarded for a dubious handball.

An Arlesey corner saw them score the winner in the 90th minute, Tayler's ball met on the volley by Karen Walker.

This Sunday, Arlesey face Barton in the first round of the Eastern Region League Cup.

Their second team were beaten 2-1 at home by Sandy, Michelle Whitehead scoring the goal.

Depleted Hitchin Hearts shared the points in a 1-1 draw at home to Leverstock Green in the Herts and Beds League.

Hearts had a large number of players unavailable for the match.

With no goalkeeper and their front line missing three regulars, this was a tough test for the girls.

Despite creating some good chances, Hearts went behind early on as the match see-sawed from end to end.

Their saving grace was a second-half penalty converted by top scorer and stand-in keeper Becky Saunders.

The points could have gone either way towards the end.
