Scouts have been taking a close look at the Canaries defender in the past few weeks

Kane Smith says he is happy to remain at Hitchin Town as interest grows in his signature.

The young full-back, a product of the Luton Town academy, has been one of Hitchin’s stand-out players since joining the Canaries from Biggleswade Town last December.

Playing at right-back, his composure on the ball and his willingness to get forward and help Jonny McNamara in attack down the right has earned him plenty of plaudits in recent months.

Agents have been in touch with the club to show their interest, while scouts from higher up the football pyramid have also been at recent Town games to run the rule over the prospect and some of his team-mates.

He was perhaps Hitchin’s best player in their defeat to Enfield Town on Monday as Mark Burke’s men were knocked out of the FA Cup at the third qualifying round stage.

And although upset about the result, which saw Hitchin miss out on a fourth qualifying round tie against Chesham, Smith says he is happy at Top Field.

Speaking to the Comet, Smith said: “Of course I want to progress and play at as high a level as possible, but it doesn’t bother me there are reports of scouts coming to watch.

“I’m really happy here at Hitchin Town and I’m learning as much as I can under a great manager.

“It’s not about my own performance, it’s about the team getting a result.

“It doesn’t matter if I thought I played ok and was happy with my individual performance if the team didn’t win.

“It’s a team game it doesn’t matter about me personally.

“All the boys are down but we’ll pick ourselves up and go again on Saturday.

“That’s what we’re about. We’ve had a couple of losses this season when we’ve shown our character in the very next game and hopefully we’ll do that again.”

Manager Burke says the defeat to Enfield will hopefully make his players stronger, starting with the home game against Redditch this weekend.

“They’ve experienced that defeat now and hopefully it’s hurt them so much that they’ll think they don’t want it to happen again,” Burke said.

“Hopefully I can advise them and pass on my experience to them, but it’s up to them to take it onboard.

“If they do then we’ll eventually get there.

“Things like this make you stronger, or it should make you stronger. In good players it will.

“I think I’ve got good players and I think they will be shaped by this experience.”

Burke added: “This season we’ve had a couple of really poor results, the 5-1 at Merthyr and a 5-1 at Histon, and they’ve reacted in winning the next games quite convincingly.

“It’s going to be a little more difficult against Redditch but the reaction I’m looking for is for them to pick themselves up and not feel sorry for themselves. What’s done is done; you can’t change it, but you can get a better result on Saturday.”
