Knebworth golfer Paul Amess won on home soil to become the Herts county champ.

The final of the 2008 county championship was between Amess (pictured left) and the more experienced Chris Tingey (Mid Herts) at Knebworth Golf Club on Sunday.

Amess, who is studying in the States, was never behind and finally ran out a 5/4 winner.

Tingey had been the leading qualifier on Friday, scoring 68 and 67 for a seven under par total of 135.

A course record equalling 66 by Ryan Newman (Brookmans Park) helped him to second place in the qualifying with a total of 137.

Amess, having scored 72 and 73 in the qualifiers, was never behind in any of his knockout matches and had outstanding opposition in John Ambridge, Newman and Laurence Allen (Brookmans Park) who was the other losing semi-finalist.

The event was staged by Knebworth Golf Club as part of their celebrations for their centenary year - 'home boy' Amess winning was the icing on the cake.
