Hitchin Town moved up to third in the Southern Premier Division table with a 2-1 win at Bedworth United.

The result saw a continuation of the Canaries’ superb run of form, which has seen them lose just once in their last 18 matches in all competitions. They also have four games in hand on the teams above them, though Poole Town, who are top, are 12 points clear.

Matt Lench put them ahead on Tuesday with a 20-yard effort in the opening 15 minutes.

Just three minutes after the interval the same player took advantage of a goalkeeping fumble to tap home his second of the evening before Bedworth scored a late consolation – the first goal Hitchin have conceded since December 5 – to make it 2-1.

This weekend Mark Burke’s men head to Weymouth, who are seventh in the table. They then return home on Monday evening when they host Cheshunt in the Herts Senior Cup.

Hitchin: Horlock, Smith, Bickerstaff, C Donnelly, Webb, Rolfe, McNamara, Lench, Kirkpatrick, Burns, Barker. Subs: B Donnelly, Martin, Brooks, Wright, Johnson.
