Hitchin Town moved up to fourth in the Southern Premier with a 3-0 win over Hayes and Yeading United in a game that saw a short pause in first-half play while fox poo was cleared off the pitch.

The result, which was courtesy of goals from Liam Brooks, Robbie Burns and Josh Bickerstaff, came just two days after a similar scoreline in the FA Trophy at Burgess Hill which saw Hitchin progress to the first round proper, meaning it has been a productive few days for Mark Burke’s men.

Their concentration wasn’t even disturbed by a break in play on 37 minutes when after being called over to just outside Hayes penalty area the referee shouted over to the side of the pitch for a bag to clear up some fox excrement on the pitch.

A bag was duly delivered and a club official scooped it up, and Hitchin in turn cleaned up against an opponent who rarely troubled Luton Town loanee Liam Gooch in the Canaries’ goal.

Callum Donnelly shot straight at Danny Boness inside the first 10 minutes while Robbie Burns fired over following a low corner into the box as Hitchin pushed for an early goal, and it eventually came on 18 minutes.

Burke’s men had half-heartedly claimed for a penalty when Burns appeared to be tripped in the box, but Brooks was alert, more so than the defenders, and when the ball rolled to him he swept it into the corner for 1-0.

Five minutes into the second half and Hayes substitute Adam Everitt fired over from long range before Hitchin made it two when Manny Adebowale’s clearance hit Burns and fell kindly for the striker to fire home.

With 15 minutes left Josh Bickerstaff’s powerful header from a corner made it three, and although the visiting team had a couple of efforts off target late on they didn’t do enough to trouble Gooch and the Canaries held on to keep a clean sheet.

In the first round of the Trophy Hitchin travel to Chelmsford City, but that is on December 10. Before then Hitchin travel away to Leamington in the league this Saturday before another away trip, to Hadley, a week on Wednesday.
