Hitchin Town may have experienced a mixed bag of results on the pitch, but off it they are unrivalled in showing community spirit – by raising cash for a courageous young lad while backing other worthy initiatives.
Hitchin lad Seraph Thomas is like many other four-year-olds. He likes dinosaurs, Lego and Minecraft. Most of all he likes his big brother Logan.
However, unlike most children his age he has high risk neuroblastoma which is an aggressive form of paediatric cancer.
For him to have vital treatment, £250,000 has to be raised – with the Caring Canaries excelling once again. The small club with the big heart has revealed they will dedicate their home fixture against Bedworth on Saturday, March 23 to raising as much cash as they can for brave Seraph.
A club spokesman said: “We pride ourselves on being a community club. When we heard about Seraph we were only too happy to help.
“Let’s pull together as a community, fill-up the bucket collections and join in the bumper crowd as a donation of the gate receipts will be added to the cause.
“We hope the town of Hitchin can get behind both us and Seraph’s cause to raise as much money as we can.”
The socially conscious Canaries also helped mark International Women’s Day as well as raising £366.20 for Hitchin-based charity Humanitas.
The club also hosted a number of youngsters from the Hitchin Belles during their ‘Women at the Game’ match against Rushall Olympic, which they lost 1-0.
The Top Field outfit are also raising money for male victims of domestic abuse by auctioning the special shirt worn by keeper Michael Johnson in memory of the late Gordon Banks.
The Canaries travel to Kings Lynn Town on Saturday.
