The home club had plenty to cheer about as Marriotts Gym Centre hosted the Herts County Championships for Women's Artistic Gymnastics on Sunday.

Sunday's championships were the first run on the new judging code for gymnastics, but the club and its gymnasts came through with flying colours.

In the level four competition 10-11 year age group, Marriotts gymnast Olivia Harry took overall gold, finishing first on beam and vault and third on bars.

Clubmates Sofie Cripps and Alexandra Radjenovic finished seventh and eighth overall, Sophie picking up third on vault and Alexandra first on the floor.

But for falls on the beam, they could have both finished in the medals.

In one of the closest competitions seen in the county championships, the level four, 12-13 year age group was won by Lucy Young with a score of 44.80, beating fellow Marriotts gymnast Jessica Barfoot who scored 44.750 into second place.

Overall Young took first on beam and third on bars and floor, and Barfoot took second on vault and beam plus third on floor. Marriotts gymnast Rebecca Lees finished sixth overall.

In the oldest level four competition, age 14 plus, Ann Rees took overall bronze medal, including second on vault, beam and floor, and third on bars.

There was further success at level three. Anna Young took silver in the age 10 year competition, as well as three seconds and a third on apparatus.

In the 11 to 12-year-old competition, it was two Marriotts gymnasts who fought out the medals with Maddison Maranian just shading the overall competition by 0.05 of a mark from Katie Bell. In the apparatus competitions, Bell took three firsts and one second, Maranian taking a first and three seconds.

In the 13 plus age group, Lauren Doherty took the overall gold with first on vault, bars and floor, and second on beam.

At the top level of competition, known as FIG and competed under the full International Federation of Gymnastics rules, Mollie Smith went head-to-head with a gymnast of international standard.

Mollie finished in silver medal position overall.

All of the gymnasts finishing in the top three in their competition qualified for the regional finals in a few weeks' time.
