Stevenage Golf Club was represented by a dozen juniors at the NAPGC Junior National Team Finals.

The event at Tamworth Golf Club attracted more than 120 juniors from all over the country, but the Stevenage boys put up a superb display of golf and swept the board finishing first and third in the team event and winning four individual titles.

The team results were impressive considering the team format of counting the best four cards from a five-man team.

Stevenage could only field four players for each of their teams due to the small squad of players available for selection.

Their victory was a fitting tribute to former Stevenage Golf Club president and NAPGC captain Eric Hardy who passed away in December. He was a great supporter of junior golf and donations received at his funeral paid for the juniors to enter this competition.

* John Annison from Letchworth Golf Club won the Centenary Seniors Open at Frilford Heath in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, on Monday.

There were 63 other entrants from across the country, including an entrant from as far afield as Scotland.

This prestigious event in the annual golfing calendar was played on the Parkland Red course, par 73, 6,885 yards long.

John shot a gross 71, two under par, equating to 38 stableford points.

The competition average par (CSS) increased to 74 due to the difficulty of the course and weather conditions.

His prize was an engraved commemorative crystal decanter plus a Taylor Made R7 Burner Driver and £150 sweep money.

John's handicap of 18 will now be cut as a consequence of his excellent performance.

Letchworth juniors recently played a competition in memory of Neil Paton, a previous junior member at the club.

There were 23 juniors playing for scratch and handicap trophies last Tuesday after the torrential rain in the morning.

The scratch winner was Laurie Owen (handicap three) who shot a gross 73 and the runner-up was Sam Towler (handicap nine) with a gross 74.

The handicap winner was Ollie Duffet (handicap 18) with a net 62 winning on countback from Jack Harman (handicap 14) who also shot a net 62.

Together with this competition, the girls played for the Mollie Thomas Salver and the winner was Tania Castle (handicap 19) who shot a net 66.

In conjunction with these competitions, the juniors also played for a place on the national leaderboard of The Daily Telegraph/Royal Bank of Scotland Junior Golf Championship.

The winners were Laurie Owen and Tania Castle. Their names have been forwarded to The Daily Telegraph for inclusion on the national leaderboard and the top 10 boys and top seven girls will be invited to play in the national final in Abu Dhabi from November 21-23.

* The blustery conditions kept the scoring very average for Henlow Golf Club's Jim Huckle Memorial Stableford competition on Sunday.

Dave Stevens (20 handicap) won the competition with a standard scratch score of 37 points.

There were several players tied with 36 points, but on countback Steve Hanifan took second slot and Martin Harries third.

In the captain's charity competition for nearest the pin, at the 12th hole, Hanifan took the honours.
