Hitchin Town's finest ever team will be reuniting next week.

Their FA Amateur Cup semi-finalists of 1961 are back next Thursday night (April 27) for the first time in years.

Members of what many people believe to be the club's best ever team will attend the first Hitchin Town players' reunion at Top Field.

The event is part of a series that will include players from the 1940s right up to the 1990s.

This first reunion, which showcases the achievements of the team that went within a whisker of a Wembley appearance, includes players from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Among the players attending will be the team's captain from the semi-final, Bruce Spavins, goalkeeper Derek Turner, Scottish international Tommy Everitt and star striker Terry Waldock.

Also attending will be the club's first ever England international Peter Hammond, 50s heroes Ray Kitchener and David Pacey, and 1970s folk-hero Paul Giggle.

Players from the 1940s - Dennis Chapman, Wink Saunders and Claude Brown - will also be present.

Hitchin chairman Terry Barratt said: "Hitchin Town has had some wonderful servants over the years and it is right that we pay tribute to them.

"This event represents a marvellous opportunity to bring together old comrades and to hear some of their stories. I sincerely hope that it proves to be the first of many such evenings at the club."

Supporters are invited to attend the event and a souvenir programme will be produced.
