Tuesday night round-up

ARLESEY Town stopped the rot of three league defeats with a 1-0 home win over Maldon on Tuesday night.

It was a Jekyll and Hyde display as a first half that saw them dominate and take the lead was followed by a second 45 minutes which saw them on the back foot most of the time.

The visitors had the first opportunity as Leon Antoine lashed in a vicious drive which Jack Rashid superbly tipped round for a corner.

A neat turn and flick from Jason Thomas set Ozie Foster away with only the keeper to beat but Darren Gould's outstretched foot denied him the opening goal.

There was no denying him moments later though when a looping cross from Thomas was delicately headed home for a 20th minute lead.

Arlesey could have added another on the break but Thomas hit his shot into the side netting.

Rashid beat down an angled shot as Maldon probed for an equaliser.

Thomas again shot into the side netting on the restart but it was the visitors who pressed hard, forcing Rashid to do exceptionally well to get down to a low shot in a crowded area.

Arlesey were having to defend deep to fend off the Maldon threat and a hesitant defence only made matters worse.

In time added on, a goalmouth scramble saw Rashid lose a cross and it was a heart-stopping moment for the Blues and their supporters as Maldon failed to capitalise on the final chance of the night.

Blues: Rashid, Barr, Bloss, Beevor (McKenzie), Dogbe, Gray, Tekell, McElroy, Thomas, Foster, Rydeheard.

* Langford went nap against Godmanchester Rovers in the Hinchingbrooke Cup first round.

The goals came from Mark Whitaker (two), James Bywater, Rob Groves and Marc Barnes.
