Langford beat Biggleswade in the Beds Senior Trophy second round with Tyler Ingham scoring the winning penalty in an epic penalty shoot-out.

Langford had gone close in the first half but Pat Daly’s shot was saved before Biggleswade’s George Bailey wriggled clear only to fire over the Reds’ bar.

Play moved from end to end in the first period with Daly shooting just wide for Langford before Ross Tompkins, in the Langford goal, saved smartly from Adam Hunt.

On 41 minutes Langford broke the deadlock when Tompkins saved from a free-kick and then launched an attack with a long clearance up to Daly who muscled his way past a defender and lobbed the goalkeeper.

The second period opened with the visitors playing at a high tempo, and Biggleswade’s patient passing football paid dividends when in the 65th minute full-back Hunt fired in a low cross and Patrick McCaffrey slammed the ball home.

Chances became few and far between though Joel Ives did hit a post for Biggleswade but the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and headed for penalties.

Both sides’ first penalties were saved then at 1-1 Ross Tompkins saved for Langford, his second of three in the shoot-out, before Stephen Brooks hit the bar for the Reds.

Each was then scored until 7-6 to Biggleswade when Pat Daly stepped up to take to keep Langford in the game, only to miss.

However, the referee awarded a retake because the Biggleswade keeper was off his line and in dramatic circumstances Daly kept his nerve.

The score crept up to 9-9 before Ross saved again for Langford and Ingham stepped up to score the winning penalty in a 10-9 scoreline and put Langford through with the 24th penalty of the shoot-out to set up a quarter-final date with Ampthill Town.

Langford are away to Harefield United on Tuesday evening in SSML Division One before they return to home soil against Ampthill Town on Saturday.
