Hitchin Town snatched a last gasp winner away to Bishops Stortford on Wednesday, earning their second straight win.

The Canaries notched their second 1-0 win in succession on Saturday when they returned to Evo Stik League South action. This time it took a last gasp winner from Robbie Burns to seal the three points against Bishops Stortford. The striker converted a diving effort by Canary skipper Dan Webb with the game deep in stoppage time.

Until the late goal, the game had looked destined to end goalless with Stortford striker Jamie Cureton most likely to break the deadlock. The veteran brought a number of good saves from Michael Johnson as well as shooting just wide on three occasions.

It was a game where defences were in charge and Hitchin struggled for fluency going forward. The Canaries’ best chances came from set-pieces as Webb forced a flying save from Callum Kitscua from one corner, then met another only for his powerful header to bounce down and over the bar.

Burns’ late decider meant a “clean sweep” for Hitchin who have played and beaten the Blues five times in all league and cup competitions this season.

Hitchin have two more home league fixtures - against Dorchester Town on Monday evening and champions Hereford on Wednesday - before the league season closes at Weymouth on Saturday 28th April.
