The Canaries and the Magpies both failed to get airborne in this goalless end of season game that had endeavour but lacked finesse.

The nearest that both sides came to breaking the deadlock was with efforts cleared off the line while Josh Mollison - starting only his third game - handled confidently as Dorchester tried to repeat their win of last season.

The visitor’s lively front line looked to get past Hitchin’s back four but the defence held firm with timely recovering challenges, Hitchin’s best chance came on 12 minutes when Dan Webb met a deep cross from Robbie Burns. His header was goal bound but cleared off the line by a Dorchester defender.

Ashley Pope and Aaron Rodriguez again came close for Dorchester before Matt Spring’s low cross for Hitchin whistled through to Trey Charles at the far post. He dived to meet the ball but could not direct it goalwards. Rodriguez then pounced on a mix-up between Spring and Webb but again shot wide.

Toby Syme replaced Webb after the break, with Kevin Byrne moving to central defence, as the visitors continued to threaten. Mollison turning over one speculative effort while Rodriguez failed to make the best of a chance created by Pope.

Trey Charles shot just wide while Jonny McNamara ran from deep but Weale gathered the ball at his feet. At the other end, Dorchester’s best chance came when Syme cleared off the line from Kyle Egan.

Hitchin had two late half-chances, McNamara just failing to meet a curling ball from Burns, and then substitute Brett Donnelly appeared to be held back in the area only for the decision to be given against him. In truth the protests were not overlong and the game tamely fizzled out.

Hitchin have one last chance to impress the Top Field faithful this season when champions Hereford come to town on Wednesday night.
