Stevenage manager Dino Maamria knows Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, after the pair met when they were taking their UEFA badges. Ahead of England’s crucial World Cup clash with Belgium on Thursday evening read CometSport to learn what Dino said about the impressive Three Lions leader.
Boro boss Maamria has been full of praise for Southgate, who has overseen two wins from two matches in Russia in the group stages of the World Cup.
A win for either England or Belgium side will see them top the group in what is essentially a play-off to determine who will finish winners of Group G.
A draw will see the sides end with identical goal difference and goals scored meaning fair play statistics will be consulted.
England, with one fewer yellow card, top the table prior to kick-off but if both teams are level on cards at the end of Thursday’s match, it will come down to drawing lots.
Speaking to CometSport at the club’s Bragbury End training ground during heatwave conditions as the Boro boss welcomed his squad back for the first day of pre-season, the Tunisian-born manager – who has been in demand for his expert opinions on the country of his birth as they are in the same group as England – hailed the unasuming Southgate.
He said: “Yes, Gareth and I did our Pro Licences together so we know each other.
“We still keep in touch but no I haven’t been texting him – I’m sure he’s very busy with his work in Russia and all that comes with it for me to bother him.
“He’s focussed on what he needs to be focussed about and I’m focussing on what I need to be focussing on.
“Gareth is a top guy – what you see is what you get.
“He’s hard working. He’s humble, he is fair with everybody and hopefully he will be successful.”
England v Tunisia kick-off 7pm. Coverage starts on ITV from 6.15pm.
