Biggleswade FC are set to face three new derbies during the forthcoming 2018-19 Spartan South Midlands Premier season – as well as retaining ‘El Wade-ico”.

After a superb fifth place finish in their first season at step five, ‘FC’ will face 15 of the same teams from last term, with four new sides coming into a league which was barely affected by the non-league reshuffle.

Three of those new teams, Potton United, Baldock Town and Arlesey Town provide derbies, while North Greenford United are one of the longer trips the Langford Road side will face in the 20 team league.

The club shared their excitement on social media at the prospect of the eagerly-awaited fixtures, posting on their official Twitter account: “We’ve some cracking derbies to look forward to.”

Potton were promoted after finishing second in the United Counties Division One, returning to step five after a 10 year absence. Baldock were also promoted after a second place finish, conceding the fewest goals in the Spartan South Midlands Division One.

Arlesey, however, had a rough season in step four, finishing 19 points adrift before dropping into Biggleswade’s league, with North Greenford transferred from the Combined Counties league after a 13th place finish.

Other derbies retained for next season are the ‘El Wadeico’ clash with Biggleswade United.

While last term presented a rare opportunity – with two promotion spots available – the 2018-19 season offers only the title winners promotion to step four.

However, Biggleswade were one of the standout performers last campaign, giving runaway champions Welwyn Garden City their first defeat of the campaign with a narrow 1-0 at Langford Road, and are a handy outside bet, if not one of the favourites.

The young club face seven Herts sides, six London teams and six Beds clubs next season under Dave Northfield.

They begin pre-season on July 7, with a trip to step six side Huntingdon Town with 3pm kick-off. Their only game at Langford Road before the season kicks off will be against step four side Northwood FC on Tuesday, Juily 24 with a 7.45pm start.

A club spokesman said: “We are looking to build on an impressive first campaign at step five.”
