Hitchin Town's disabled team has made its mark this year.

Their Ability Counts team were crowned league champions in the Herts and Beds FA Ability Counts League after a successful season on and off the field.

With the help of North Herts People First, the team applied to Sport Relief via the Herts Community Foundation for a grant.

The sum of £5,000 was donated to the team and this helped the purchase of kit and other equipment.

A Football Foundation donation of £400 was also secured.

On the field, the club's two teams finished in the first two places. Hitchin's A team enjoyed a 100 per cent record, conceding just one goal and scoring 60. Their B team finished runners-up.

The Hitchin Town Ability Counts team is part of the club's community development programme.

Mark Burke of Hitchin Town said: "It gives us great pleasure to enjoy the success of this committed group of footballers.

"Some overcome great difficulties to play the game and their dedication should be a source of inspiration.
