Harlow 37 Datchworth 14

Datchworth were knocked out in the third round of the national EDF Energy Senior Vase at a well-drilled Harlow team.

The hosts crossed the whitewash six times to run out worthy winners.

Harlow started strongly and crossed twice within the opening 10 minutes of the game for two unconverted tries. It could have been more but for some good defence from the visitors.

Datchworth then came back into the game and had a sustained period of pressure for the next 20 minutes.

Good defence from the home side and some poor execution by the visitors prevented the score. Twice the ball went to winger Alex Pilborough who was prevented from scoring with last-ditch tackles in the corner.

Datchworth finally did add a score. From a tap penalty, prop John Bambra took the short ball and powered over. Fly-half Andrew Tarsey added the conversion.

Harlow added two more scores before the break. Clean ball was won at the front of a lineout and the maul inched its way forward and finally crossed the try line for the score. A fourth score followed as the ball was sent wide right for the winger to touch down in the corner.

Datchworth knew they needed the first score in the second half if the game was going to remain a contest.

Turning over possession at the restart enabled the visitors to apply some pressure through the forwards.

As the visitors inched their way to the line, Bambra was again able to power over from short range for his second touchdown. Tarsey once again converted.

With only two scores now separating the teams, Harlow began to dominate territory and the tie drifted away from the visitors as they were unable to secure any possession.

Harlow's fifth try came from a backs move where the blindside winger came off his wing to collect the ball off the fly-half and carve through the defensive line to score.

As the clock ticked down, Harlow continued to dominate possession and rounded off the result.

Their forwards set up the maul again from a lineout and drove it over for the converted score just before the final whistle.
