Men's hockey round-up

There was a mixed weekend for Blueharts in league and cup action.

Harts hosted Bedford Town in the Premier A and took all three points with a 3-1 win.

They took the lead after 15 minutes when Adam Wells scored from close range following some good play.

Harts could not keep possession of the ball and Bedford equalised before half time.

It did not help that the goalscorer turned villain was off the pitch having received a yellow card for a bad stick tackle!

The second half saw a more composed Blueharts side and it was not long before they scored their second, Ashley Hammond finishing off a great team effort with a powerful first-time strike.

Harts managed to score this second goal with 10 men on the pitch as John Barrett was also given time out for the mildest of stick tackles.

The victory was sealed 10 minutes from time when captain Oliver Hammond scored a thunderbolt of a short corner giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Harts crashed out of the HA Cup the following day, losing on a 'golden goal' scored in extra-time against Cambridge City.

This goal-fest saw the full-time score stand at 4-4. Colin Burnell netted twice from short corners with John Sapsed and Richard Hamilton adding the other two.

Harts were close to winning but could not hold a lead in the dying minutes of normal time.

In the first minute of extra time, Cambridge were awarded a short corner which they scored to win the game on the 'golden goal' rule.

The game was not without controversy as four Blueharts players - Barrett, Will Pugh, Oliver Hammond and Sapsed - received yellow cards for various offences. This meant Harts played over half the game with only 10 men.

Their second team were beaten 3-2 by Vauxhall minus their captain and vice-captain.

Harts won the first penalty corner of the match which Michael Weeks slotted home with a powerful strike for his debut goal for the club.

A second short corner was won and this time put away by Tim Price.

But Vauxhall were a different side after the break and scored three times via a combination of a penalty flick, a penalty corner and a goal from open play.

Two goals from Ian Heywood could not stop Letchworth losing by the odd goal in five at Upminster.

Other scores: Letchworth II 1 (Brian Ward) Harpenden II 1; Harpenden III 1 Letchworth III 0; Letchworth IV 6 (Alex Moyes hat-trick, Jack Fraser two, George Thomas) Berkhamsted II 0; Harpenden IV 6 Letchworth V 0.

Stevenage entertained Chelmsford 3rds in an entertaining and open encounter - sharing six goals in the process.

Tim Dingley was forced into action in the Stevenage goal within the first minutes, making a point blank save.

Stevenage took the lead after 10 minutes when great play from Gary Brown and Ollie Holt set up Ben Oliver, who calmly slotted the ball past the oncoming keeper.

The home side seemed to be caught up with their celebrations, when Chelmsford equalised from the restart.

Nick Reilly then crossed for Jon Oliver to give Stevenage the lead again after good work from Chris Nichols and Chris Strickland.

Late on in the half, Strickland put Danny Blackburn through and his shot deflected wide off the keeper.

The second half saw Chelmsford strike first with a well-taken penalty corner, which gave Dingley no chance.

The visitors got the upper hand and took the lead as another defensive blunder gifted them a third goal.

Stevenage searched for the equaliser which finally came when Nichols put Ben Oliver through to flick the ball in the roof of the net for his second of the day.

Other scores: Royston 1 Stevenage II 2 (Scholes, Taylor); Stevenage III 4 MBDA 1; Broxbourne VI 0 Stevenage IV 3; Southgate Adelaide III 1 Stevenage V 1 (Webb); Stevenage VI 2 (Trew, Hale) Southgate Adelaide IV 2.

MBDA's season got worse as they were subjected to a heavy 4-1 defeat by Stevenage 3rds.

A goal down at the break, MBDA were swept aside with three further goals coming from excellent play.

Austin Mahoney managed to grab a consolation goal near the end - their first goal in almost three hours of hockey.
