FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Bedford Town 0 Hitchin Town 2

The Canaries made it three away wins in eight days with arguably their most professional performance of the season at the New Eyrie on Tuesday night.

Bedford were beaten by goals from two of their former players, Josh Sozzo and Gavin Jaggard.

The Canaries were full value for the points and were rarely troubled by the home side.

A crowd of nearly 500 (488) attended a game that was originally abandoned after an hour at Christmas.

At the time, Hitchin claimed they were on top when snow forced the game to be stopped. There was no doubting that claim on Tuesday.

Bedford started well, however, and Richard Wilmot stopped a goalbound effort from ex-Canary Craig Rydeheard.

Hitchin gradually gained control and Stuart Hammonds, with a header, and Sozzo both went close to scoring.

There was a blow for Hitchin when David Hicks went off injured, but equally, Bedford lost a key man in Rene Howe.

Sozzo gave Hitchin the lead on the stroke of half-time, finishing well after a through ball by Daniel French.

After the break, Hitchin continued in the ascendancy and Sozzo and Jaggard both had opportunities to extend the lead.

Jaggard scored Hitchin's second goal in the 61st minute, firing home from close range after Aaran Cavill's shot was blocked.

Hitchin were comfortable for the remainder of the game and it was their fans in the crowd that were making all the noise.

Canaries: Wilmot, Pugh, Okai, Hammonds, Folds, Hicks (Lochhead 32), French, Cavill, Jaggard, Sozzo, Ducket.

* There was extra-time heartache for 10-man Stotfold as they went down 3-1 after extra-time at St Neots in the Hunts Premier Cup on Tuesday night.

Two yellow cards (both for dissent) in the space of five minutes for Jermaine Daley saw him ordered off to give an advantage to the home team on 25 minutes.

Damien Matthews headed in from a free-kick, conceded by Daley before he left the pitch, but the other Stotfold players performed well for the rest of the 90 minutes and often made St Neots look as if they were a man short.

Their reward came with one of the last kicks of normal time when Adey Bascombe rounded former keeper Steve Young to knock the ball in from a tight angle on the right.

St Neots looked the more likely to score in the extra 30 minutes and eight minutes into the second period, a chipped ball into the box found Steve Kuhne waiting to head the ball in.

Five minutes later, Kuhne set up Kevin Ashby to dash Stotfold's last remaining hope of winning silverware this season.

Rokermen: Blower, Daley, Beckett (S Blower 85), Frater, Gonzague, Cashman, Benton, Potter, Blackett, Bascombe, Harrington.

* Langford were 3-0 winners at Ramsey in the same competition thanks to goals from Lee Wilson (two) and Russell Bull.
