There aren’t too many people on the planet who can say they’ve flown off a high-powered bike at 180mph – but Royston’s brave Luke Mossey has, thankfully, living to tell the tale.

British Superbikes rider Mossey crashed off the machine during race one at Snetterton this weekend after the machine’s brakes failed, sustaining fractured ribs which prevented him from taking part in the next race.

The bike was running well for Mossey but an early crash saw him being held up and slipping to 12th place.

The 25-year-old tried to battle his way back up the field, but, on the eighth lap, he suffered a brake problem and crashed out at high speed at Bentley Straight.

He said: “When your brakes fail at 180mpph and you have to bail out – [I’ve] never been so scared in my life and just so lucky there was run-off so I didn’t hit anything. “[I] feel like I’ve been hit by a bus,” adding, “My ribs are killing me.”

Prior to the crash Mossey and his JG Speedfit Kawasaki team were full of confidence going into race day after strong free practice runs and a qualifying session that saw him start seventh on the grid for race one.

There was a brighter note for Mossey’s team as his teammate Leon Haslam again took the double win, placing him firmly at the top of the standings, meaning the team can leave Snetterton with positives to take from the weekend’s racing.

However, while being pleased for his colleague Mossey was frustrated.

He said: “I’m so disappointed. We’d showed good form all weekend and worked hard to be consistently near the top. I felt good on the bike and I was really looking forward to the races.

He explained what happened during the crash: “I got pushed out wide avoiding the Andrew Irwin crash and had to drop back several places, but I was making good progress and I felt like I could push for a top five. However, I suffered with a brake problem and was forced to jump off the bike.

“I’m just so disheartened as we need our luck to change. I’ve possibly fractured a couple of ribs down the side so I will regroup and get myself fit for Knockhill and hopefully come back with some good results there,” concluded Mossey.

He was full of praise for the medical assistance he received at trackside, posting on his personal Twitter account: “Thank you to all the official Superbike medics. They do an incredible job and did all the scans and X-rays at the track without having to go to hospital. [They are the] best in the world.”
