Hitchin's highly-rated super lightweight fighter Tom Ansell kept his unbeaten record after beating Michael Williams from Leicester 59-55 after six absorbing rounds after their super lightweight bout at the York Hall on Saturday evening.

Despite a cagey opening as he sized up the wily 26-year-old Williams Ansell was ahead throughout.

Ansell looked comfortable as he constantly strove to work an opening to the body.

The 25-year-old from Hitchin had lost a stone through intense training last year to compete in the super lightweight division, down from 154lbs super welterweight to 140lbs.

The 5ft 9in fighter who has been training out of the Elite Gym near the town’s railway station as well as Total Boxer in Hornsey went into the fight unbeaten in his first five professional bouts.

Ansell has impressed knocking out Aleksandar Chukaleyski and winning his four other bouts including triumphing over the experienced Fonz Alexander at the York Hall last June and Canning Town’s Lee Hallet on a raucous night at Tottenham back in October.

As the final bell went the orthodox, former rugby-player turned boxer had far too much in his locker against the 5ft 9in Williams as the talented Hitchin hotshot claimed another triumph on his way to his next fight at the Copper Box in the Olympic Park later this month.

“It was almost a sparring session at times but it’s all good experience.

“It’s always great to fight here at the York Hall and the atmosphere was great. I’m looking forward to fighting at the Copper Box later this month.”

Popular Ansell will be back in the gym this week working hard ahead of his seventh professional fights after having signed to Sky Sports for the card at the site of the former London 2012 boxing venue in a bid to boost his bid for a shot at a Southern Area title before the year is out.

The card will be live on Sky Sports, headlined by Charlie Edwards as he makes the first defence of his WBC world flyweight title against Spain’s Angel Moreno.

Former Letchworth Rugby Club turned fly-half Tom’s fights are renowned for the passionate support his former rugby pals and other well-wishers bring – with fans known as the Ansell Army.

Looking forward to the card modest Tom said: “I found out about the Sky deal only recently. My promoter Steve Goodwin gave me a ring and asked if I was interested and I said ‘yes, 100 per cent’.

“It’s a massive honour. To be on the same bill as Charlie Edwards who is headlining is breathtaking. I never thought something like that would happen, especially this soon into my boxing career.

“I just want to say a big thank you to all my support and sponsors. I’d never have dreamed of fighting at the Copper Box when I was playing fly-half for Letchworth.

“They call fly-half a bit of a flash boy’s spot. I hope I’ve proved to people that I’m not flash in the slightest. I can’t wait to fight at the Copper Box. It’s all a bit surreal.”

Tom’s highly-respected trainer Tony has been quietly pleased with his fighter’s progress.

The experienced Tony has been guiding the Hitchin hotshot out of the Total Boxer gym in Hornsey, North London and while he is not one to get carried away, is confident his boy is making progress.

He said: “Tom would have learned nothing tonight if he had knocked his man out in the first round. It’s all good experience.

“He listens and takes on board what I tell him. I’m very pleased for him and we move onto the Copper Box.”

Call 07854 115766 for tickets for the Tom’s next fight, at the Copper Box. Tom’s sponsors are Southern Grove, Elite Vans, Hermit Of Redcoats, Nick Ansell PA, Top Guard UK, Redlift Hire, BD Electrical, Macron Herts, Food 1 Consultancy and Holts of Witham.
