Hitchin Town were washed away on Saturday as the rains came down.

They lost all four rinks at Baldock to go down by 33 shots (64-97).

The top rink for Hitchin was Des Owens, Derek Conder, Ian Thorne and Les Lane, who lost on the last end.

Rink one: M Squires, N Webb, G Munge, S Dawson lost 14-28.

Rink two: D Owens, D Conder, I Thorne, L Lane lost 24-27.

Rink three: R Cole, G Billingham, W Harrison, A Hill lost 15-25.

Rink four: D Downham, R Parker, J Hill, A Cook lost 11-17.

Hitchin's midweek team had two more matches. They both started in rainy conditions in the first halves before conditions improved during the afternoon.

They lost by 10 shots (54-64) at Luton last Tuesday. Hitchin won on only two rinks out of the four and their highest winning rink was Stan Hearne, Roy Cole and John Hill.

Rink two: Hitchin (S Hearne, R Cole, J Hill) won 16-11.

Rink three: Hitchin (D Condor, I MaCleod, I Page) lost 15-18.

Rink four: Hitchin (S Wheatley, K Porter, M Wadsworth) won 14-11.

Rink five: Hitchin (R Parker, D Owens, G Munge) lost 9-24.

But they beat Barton-le-Clay by 34 shots (93-59) last Thursday and won on all four rinks. The result was secured by a great win by an all ladies' team of Joan Squires, Joan Dyer and Diane Porter; coupled with a good win by Sid Wheatley, Brian Marsden and Geoff Munge.

Rink three: Hitchin (Anne Marsden, K Porter, R Cole) won 18-17.

Rink four: Hitchin (S Wheatley, B Marsden, G Munge) won 22-12.

Rink five: Hitchin (Ruby Males, D Condor, John Dyer) won 20-16.

A further heavy downpour on Monday morning threatened the bank holiday spoon drive but 14 players braved the cold and initial drizzle to complete the event.

They were rewarded with a dry and bright completion of the event and the spoon was won by Roy Cole with 33 shots.

- Stevenage Leisure Centre Indoor Bowls Club is looking to increase its membership for next season.

Home matches are held on the bowls green at Stevenage Leisure Centre.

Evening leagues take place from 6.30-8.30pm Monday-Friday at £2 per game. The annual subscription is £20.

Members may enter existing teams or if they wish form new teams for these leagues - all teams have to be with the league secretary by the end of June.

The club also play weekend matches (usually Sundays) against other local teams as both home and away fixtures, which are usually played over 21 ends.
