Arlesey Town round-up

It was a poor day at the office for Arlesey Town on Bank Holiday Monday.

They gave away three sloppy goals to share the points in a 3-3 draw away from home at Ware.

The Blues fell behind early on and had defender Paul Stanley to thank for getting them back in the match before they went behind again to trail at half time.

They levelled through Martin Young, who had come on for Lee Tekell, in the latter stages of the second half.

Skipper James Gray proceeded to give them the lead before the hosts pulled a goal out of the hat to preserve a point.

This result came 48 hours after former Conference outfit Canvey Island left Arlesey's Raj Villa Stadium pointless following a 3-1 defeat (reports Marcus Crawley).

It was the Blues who were first out of the blocks on Saturday with a goal inside three minutes.

Tekell's free-kick was not cleared and striker Michael McKenzie could not really miss from inside the six-yard box.

Chances were generally at a premium throughout the half, with Canvey's threat limited to set plays.

The Blues were denied a second after quarter of an hour when a goalbound shot by Paul Bloss was blocked by a defender.

Goalscorer McKenzie limped off before the break and he was replaced by MK Dons loanee Sam Baldock.

The teenager took exactly four minutes to endear himself to the home crowd. Craig Rydeheard slipped the ball through with the Canvey defence trying to play offside and Baldock easily beat keeper Ricky Wiseman.

Arlesey's two-goal superiority was probably not a fair reflection of the play and Canvey showed renewed vigour after the break.

Their pressure saw Leon Gordon pull a shot wide and Jack Rashid was seriously tested for the first time when he pushed away Nicky Rugg's effort.

A handball shout apart - when the referee ruled Tekell's cross hit Dave Kreyling on his chest and not his arm - Arlesey were largely under the cosh.

But Rydeheard's 30-yard drive which flew wide was the prelude to the third Arlesey goal on 69 minutes.

Ozie Foster's miskick fell perfectly for debutant Baldock and he scored his second of the afternoon with consummate ease.

Canvey did not lie down and Rashid had to be at his acrobatic best to keep out one effort in particular.

An Arlesey fourth was also a possibility as Baldock turned provider for the marauding Kaan Fehmi.

A scorer in his previous two matches, Fehmi lost his nerve this time and fired far too high.

Canvey's efforts were rewarded with a consolation goal eight minutes from time.

There could be few complaints as skipper Craig Davidson was tripped by substitute Junior George on the edge of the area. Kevin Dobinson blasted home the resulting penalty.

Worse was to follow as Foster was carted off following a hefty collision with keeper Wiseman.

Blues: Rashid, Stanley, Bloss, Dillnutt (George 64m), Dogbe, Gray (Young 75m), Fehmi, Tekell, Foster, McKenzie (Baldock 38m), Rydeheard.
