Round two of the Midweek Road Race League sent huge numbers from North Herts Road Runners and Fairlands Valley Spartans to St Albans.
The Squirrels took a squad of 64 and maintained their third place overall in Division One with a third place on the night, although the men did place second.
That was partly thanks to Thomas Webb's third place while team-mates Ben Hadman and Andrew Leach finished eighth and ninth.
Katie Harbon took second for the NHRR women with Natasha Pitman, Astrid McKeown and Rhia Bothia all finished inside the top 20.
Ladies' captain Pitman said: "I am delighted we finished third behind the two strongest teams from my 15 years of experience in the league."
The Spartans meanwhile had 67 involved, enough to field three teams in both the men's and women's race.
The best results for their A string were Simon Jackson in 16th, followed in by Simon Fraser and Andrew Patterson while for the women it was Suzy Hawkins in 13th, Gabrielle O'Brien and Michelle Reeves their next runners.
