Saturday football round-up

ARLESEY Town's success on their travels continued with all three points at Sittingbourne.

Poor at Hitchin Road, the Blues have the third best away record in the Southern League Division One East.

Saturday's victory in Kent took their away total to 28 points.

If this form has been reproduced at home, they would be comfortably in the play-off positions.

They won the points with a Lee Tekell penalty in the 82nd minute and although the margin of victory was close, the Blues as usual missed several chances to make the scoreline more empathetic.

On the downside, Michael Cox, who has been outstanding all season, was forced to the sidelines with a calf injury after seven minutes of the second half.

Arlesey thought they had taken the lead in the third minute when a shot by Martin Williams from 25 yards was clawed away to safety by the Brickies keeper Steve Williams.

In the 10th minute a marauding left-wing run by Paul Bloss was nodded down by Williams to Luke Gregson who shot wide.

The final action of the half saw another fine save by the Sittingbourne keeper from a deflected free-kick from Tekell. This resulted in him sustaining a shoulder injury which forced his substitution.

For the second half Sittingbourne became more attack minded and Bradley Spice missed an open goal as the Arlesey defence failed to clear a right-wing attack.

The Blues had little difficulty in holding out but their attacking options so obvious in the first half had dried up.

The visitors were failing to put together any pressure to test the stand-in keeper until, with eight minutes remaining, Gregson sliced open the home defence.

Michael McKenzie took the ball around the keeper only to be brought down before Tekell made no mistake from the spot.

Arlesey had little difficulty holding out to make amends for the home defeat suffered at the hands of Sittingbourne on the last Saturday of January.

Blues: Tasker, Foster, Bloss, Hatchett, Hay, Cox (Taylor 52), Hobbs (Nicholl 72), Gregson, Williams (Downham 87), McKenzie, Tekell.

Stotfold shared the points at home to Boston Town.

They fell behind after 25 minutes when Dean McElroy, trying to shield the ball out of play for a goal kick, lost out under pressure from John Rowan.

Despite protestations that the ball - twice - had gone out of play, Rowan's cross was turned into his own net by the outstretched boot of new boy Lance Gentle-King.

Boston threatened again before the break as Nathan Collins headed wide from a free-kick, Matt Stares' effort was well parried by Nigel Blower from close range and Paul Goodhand's powerful shot went wide of the far post.

Deep into added time, Paul Harrington's free-kick was headed back across goal by Ryan Frater and then up in the air by Jay Thomas.

The ball fell for Richard Beckett who blasted a volleyed equaliser in from the edge of the six-yard box.

Stotfold had more possession after the break but still failed to create too many chances.

Frater's first-time shot was cleared off the line by Shaun Baker before Boston broke and Gary Bull tried to squeeze a shot in from a tight angle on the left and hit an upright.

Bull had a shot blocked and also headed wide later in the half.

Stotfold might have won it late on when a good ball into the box from McElroy found Junior George in a great position in front of the keeper.

But the ball bounced off his thigh and through to keeper Paul Buttery.

Rokermen: Blower, McElroy, Chapman, Frater, Gentle-King, Beckett, Benton, George, Thomas (Bailey 77), Hussain (Daley 46), Harrington.

Goals from Rob Groves and Joe Delasalle earned Langford a 2-1 win at Oxhey Jets after they fell behind to an early strike.

Arlesey Athletic were 1-0 winners over Amersham in SML Division One thanks to a 35th minute goal from Matt Irving.
