The 955 (Stevenage) Squadron Air Training Corps were flying when they entered the annual athletics competition.

Fifteen members competed in track and field events against other squadrons in the wing.

Cadet Jack White crossed the finishing line of the 400m heat in first place but missed the final of his event later that day due to a football cup final!

This was made up for when he threw - and broke the wing record - the javelin, winning a gold medal.

Cadet White was not the squadron's only medal winner.

Corporal Tom Wheeler flew through the air to win a silver medal in the long jump. This was enough for a place on the bus to Nottingham for the regional athletics and to earn a Wing Blue.

Cadet Robert Fox, while carrying an ankle injury, was still quick enough to win a bronze medal in the 800m for the boys.

Cadet Jamie Yeend also ran in the 800m in the class above and he won gold in the afternoon final.

He is going to represent the wing at regional athletics with Corporal Wheeler and Cadet White.

Corporal Christopher Bridger competed in the shot and discus and won a silver medal in the class C category of the latter event.

Others narrowly missed the medals but earned overall team points.

The female cadets also enjoyed a day of competition.

Cadets Hayley Allen, Charlotte Robertson, Rachel Taylor, Beverly Brooks and Sergeant Sarah Fox (also the team captain) competed in various events.

Sergeant Fox competed in the 200m final where she made it through the heats to the final but unfortunately just missed out on the medals. This culminated in the female 4x100m relay race where they narrowly missed out on the medals.

- The air cadets are open to all young people aged 13 to 17.

Activities include flying, gliding, shooting, sports and adventure training.
