The titles keep coming for ace javelin thrower Neil McLellan.

The Stevenage and North Herts athlete added the East of England title to his recently acquired Southern title on Sunday on home soil at Ridlins Athletics Stadium.

He threw a track, club and new lifetime best of 72.27m, lifting him to number five in Great Britain for this current year.

Four of his six throws went over the 70m line to give him one of his best set of throws in his career so far.

This win was good preparation for the European trials and AAA Championships in Manchester this Sunday.

And Neil's sister, Shelley, took a creditable silver in the women's shot put at the same Eastern Championships with a throw of 12.16m. This was her first East of England medal at senior level.

There were nine other gold medals for club members.

Following her success at Gateshead, Bunmi Awokoya was a double winner in her 100m and 200m races (under-17 women) joining Joanne Mansell (800m) and Loren Scanes (discus) with golds in that age group.

Cameron Webb gained another sprint gold, winning the under-17 200m in 24.0.

In the under-15 age group, Chloe Vernon-Hamilton (1500m), Lewis Keeble (800m in a new best of 2:14.4) and Connor Winters (pole vault with a new best of 2.40m) were the other winners.

Other second places went to Laura Saxon (under-13 girls' shot), Anne Rees (under-15 girls' 75m hurdles), Frances Gross (under-15 girls' discus), Louise Shortland (women's pole vault), Ben David (under-13 boys' 100m), Jack Gates (under-13 boys' long jump), Connor Winters (under-15 boys' triple jump), Aaron Reynolds (under-17 men's 400m), Callum McKechnie (under-17 men's 3000m), Zikri Elias Haziq (under-17 men's triple jump) and Marcus McKechnie (under-20 men's 3000m).

Neil McLellan was also busy at the Men's Southern League match at a warm and sunny Watford on Saturday.

He completed his usual four throwing events, winning the javelin (66.97m), hammer (36.27m) and shot (13.04) and also finishing second in the discus (34.87m).

The men's team collected a further eight first places.

New member Don Macauley clocked 11.8 and 23.7 to win both B string sprints.

Adam Searle also had two first places with 4:26.3 (1500m A) and 11:20.7 (3000m steeplechase B); Marcus McKechnie partnered Adam in the steeplechase, winning the A string in 11:06.4.

Sam Poulton with 53.9 (400m B), Aaron Hull with 41.77m (javelin B) and Laurie Pirie clearing 1.80m in the high jump were the other winners.

Second placings from Paul Ingram-Tedd (100 and 200m A), Marcus McKechnie (800m B), Sam Poulton (400m hurdles B), Lee Grint (long jump B), Aaron Hull (shot and discus B), Mick Shortland (hammer B) and both 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams helped the club to gather 121 points.

It was a close match with winners Wycombe Phoenix scoring 125, hosts Harlow 124 and fourth team Chelmsford 117.

The club's lack of 5000m runners and of transport for vaulting poles lost points which would have led to a better result.

The club remains sixth in the 16-team league.

* Stevenage and North Herts AC member Joylyn Saunders-Mullins was a star in the British Masters at Birmingham over the weekend.

The Letchworth-based athlete won three medals in the women's over-50 age group.

Joylyn won gold in the shot with a distance of 9.55m as well as two silvers in the 200m (28.54) and 400m (63.64).

She is involved in the XV European Veterans' Track and Field Championships in Poznan, Poland. They start on Wednesday (July 19) and run until July 30.
