Fairlands Valley Spartans went from the London Marathon to the county track championships at Ridlins in Stevenage.

Four of their medal winners had run the full 26.2 miles on April 23.

Spartans won 12 medals - six individual golds, three individual silvers, two individual bronzes and one team gold.

Fastest in 1500m was Nicholas Crowley who ran the under-17s race in 5:15.1.

Steve Smithson won gold in the new veteran men (35 plus) category with a time of 5:19.5.

On his way to adding gold and silver to his current county marathon champ (Vet 50) status, Jim Brown took silver in the 1500m in 5:40.

Club coach Tessa Stephenson won another gold for the Spartans, the women's Vet 40 race in 5:53.9. Sharon Crowley took the bronze in 6:29.7.

Paul Holgate finished in 6:19.1 and was fourth in the male 40 plus event.

Just over four hours later, several Spartans tackled the 5,000m.

Simon Bell was third overall in the race in 16:48.2.

Steve Smithson was second in the male (35 plus) category with 20:01.4.

Jim Brown moved up to gold with 20:18.2 to win the Vet 50 category.

Paul Holgate won the Vet 40 gold with a time of 22:53.8.

Annette Bell won the women's 3,000m race in 11:17.5 while Sharon Crowley took the women's female 40 plus gold with 13:30.3.

There was also Spartans' success in some shorter events.

Dave Stephenson won bronze (Vet 40) in the 100m with 13.3 and silver in the 200m with 26.7.

Iris Hornsey was first Vet 60 woman in the 800m with 3:16.

The last events of the day were the 4x400m relays.

The Spartans women's team, although not all living in Hertfordshire, of Crowley (1:20.38), Stephenson (1:19.04), Michelle Shires (1:51.30) and Bell (1:10.82) were fourth overall in their event.

The men's team won the veterans' county championship through Tony Willson (1:08.56), Stephenson (1:01.56), Andy Jay (1:12.87) and Dave Clarke (1:07.97).

Just five days after the London Marathon, Jim Brown beat the 20 minute barrier in a 5k race for the first time in months. He ran the Serpentine Last Friday of the Month 5k in 19:54.

Roger Biggs took his total of States in the USA where he has run a marathon to 36 with back-to-back runs on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday's Triple Trail Marathon based in Newark, Delaware, was on a tough two-lap course almost entirely on forest tracks, with four river crossings.

At the first Roger took a swim but got round to finish in 5-19:52!

Not expecting much on the second race - Sunday's New Jersey Marathon - he was surprised to get round in 3-48:25 on a two-lap flat course in and around Long Branch on the New Jersey Atlantic Coast.

Beverley Harlow ran a season's best on Sunday at the Keswick half marathon. Her time was 2-04:17 in glorious weather.

Four members of North Herts Road Runners ran at the monthly 5k race at London's Hyde Park.

Angela Tyrrell finished in 17:50, crossing the line as the second female in the race.

Also running among the regular competitors at Hyde Park were Duncan Hooker (18:56), Martyn Annetts (19:01) and Chris Priestley (22:11).
