North Herts Road Runners had a memorable weekend of racing as they made history with a league title win.

They became the first club to win the Three Counties Cross-country League for five consecutive seasons.

The latest success was sealed at the final fixture, a demanding 4.8-mile race at Dunstable Downs, where they did just enough to clinch top spot in the 14-club league ahead of close rivals Rugby & Northampton AC.

NHRR joint chair and ladies’ captain Tash Pitman said: "Well done everyone on a superb team effort over the five races with awesome support.

"Thank you all for making it happen and especially our awesome coaching team."

She singled out NHRR cross-country rep John Auld for "doing a brilliant job organising the league and all the encouragement to run".

There were 43 Squirrels completing the hilly course on Sunday and 88 took part in at least one race across the season.

Auld added: "On the day we finished first team, first for the women and second for the men and this is how we finished the season."

There were plenty of individual awards for NHRR too.

Katie Harbon took a clean sweep of the women’s open, winning every one of the five races.

Hannah Ridley won the 25-29 female category, Rob Jowett the 30-34 male and Rhia Botha the 35-39 female groups while Tash Pitman was top for the 45-49 ladies.

The Watford Half Marathon was the other big event of the weekend and there was 11 from Fairlands Valley Spartans in the undulating event that started and finished in Cassiobury Park.

And they had some big runs.

David Harris-Cherguit finished in one hour 18 minutes 23 seconds to finish 23rd overall out of the 1,329 finishers and ninth in his age group.

Nick Gill was just 11 seconds outside of his PB, recording 1:27:27, and is now ready for a tilt at the Cambridge Half in four weeks.

He was just six seconds behind Stuart Archer here while Stuart Mead was another FVS runner going under 90 minutes, finishing 71st overall in 1:25:53.

Jim Brown managed 1:59:07 while Wendy Tharani got home in 2:09:38.

Despite helping another runner who had got into difficulties, John Nelms still finished in 2:03:25 and Sharon Crowley said Watford was her fastest half marathon for a number of years as she finished in 2:26:43.

The other Spartans were Lloyd Dias (1:56:00), Sue Hamer (2:17:27) and Rebecca Rayner (2:39:46).

Yuko Gordon meanwhile was running at the British Masters 10k Championship at the Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit and having to dig deep, she came out on top to claim gold in the FV70+ race, with the medal positions separated by just 54 seconds.

The other big event for Phoenix was the Breacon to Cardiff 70km ultra.

The race followed the Taff Trail starting in the Brecon Beacons National Park with the challenge needing to be completed within 12 hours.

And all four of the Phoenicians did so.

Emma Mead crossed the line after 11:02:32 with Ashley Bates 10 seconds behind.

Among the parkrun headlines, Simon Jackson of FVS won at Stevenage in a parkrun PB of 16:53, with team-mate Grant Ramsay eighth.

Martin Dudley ran his 200th parkrun.

There was a parkrun PB too for Chris Leigh of Stevenage Phoenix at Edenbrook Country, finishing in 23:10.
