Lauren Parker has bounced back from a career-threatening back injury to face Italian Giuseppina Di Stefano for the vacant EBU European Super Flyweight title at York Hall.

The 32-year-old from Letchworth had claimed the IBO Inter-Continental Super Flyweight belt in October 2022 but suffered a huge setback when an ongoing back issue required spinal surgery in February.

Parker completed a six-month recovery and physiotherapy plan as well as gradual progressive training with her coach Paul Webber before being given the green light to return to the ring.

The former pupil of the Knights Templar School in Baldock, said: "After the absolute highs of winning the IBO title, it soon became clear I had another battle on my hands.

"Following an MRI scan and various appointments, it was decided spinal surgery was absolutely necessary to address my back issue.

"While the prospect of it was petrifying, I had never had a surgical procedure before, it became apparent that not going ahead with it would mean the end of my boxing career.

"It was a very scary decision to make, but understanding the importance of my long-term wellbeing and the future of my career, which was starting to look very very positive, I mustered the courage to proceed with the surgery.

"Thankfully it was a success, but it, and the recovery, tested me both physically and mentally and delayed my progress as a fighter, especially after such a huge night winning the IBO title."

Soon after completing her recovery the option of a European title fight in September came about, but with her training camp in full swing, Parker suffered a set back when the fight date was rescheduled.

"It was a challenge when the fight was delayed, however, with determination and resilience, I knuckled down and continued," she said.

"This training camp for has been around 16 weeks, with a small lay-off in between, but looking at the bigger picture, I believe things happen for reasons and it allowed me more time to prepare my body for what’s to come.

"Preparation for the fight has been great, I've dedicated myself to rigorous training sessions, improving my overall skill and performance.

"Under Paul's guidance, I feel I have no doubt developed a solid foundation and enhanced my capabilities in various aspects of boxing which I am very happy and grateful for."

Parker and Saturday's opponent Di Stefano look well-matched, with both having an equal pro record of seven wins, one draw and one defeat in nine outings.

But the Letchworth star is confident of adding the European strap to her honours list.

"I believe the challenge that lies ahead of me will not be an easy task, as it shouldn’t be at this level. The Italian opposition that I will face has the exact same record as myself and looks strong with a come forward approach," added the former Stevenage Boxing Club fighter.

"I am confidence in my abilities, the progress I have made and believe I will out smart my opponent and quite possibly be too strong.

"I would love a stoppage win, however I am prepared for a hard 10 round battle.

"I'm very much looking forward to boxing at the famous York Hall in London for the first time, it’s extremely iconic and I have a big support coming so I have no doubts it will be a night to remember."
