A superstar youngster from Hitchin has won a British golf tournament.

James Berry competed in the US Kids Golf British Kids Championship 2023, in the category for eight-year-old boys.

Over nine holes of the Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, on August 10 and 11, he scored a remarkable 35 on his first round and 44 on his second round - giving him a total score of 79.

And that proved enough to comfortably see off the competition, with James finishing three shots in front of the second-placed golfer - and ahead of a golfer who won a world junior championship earlier this year.

James' success was a family affair too, with his brother Samuel caddying and supporting him through his rounds.

Following James' win, his dad, David, said: “I have never been so nervous watching sport in my life.

James's success stemmed from a decision by David and Vicky, James's parents, to enter him into the East London US Kids Tour after competing in junior competitions at Chesfield Downs in Graveley.

His performance at the East London tournament was enough to earn him entry into the British Kids Championship, where he didn't forget his home club, wearing a 'lucky shirt' from Chesfield Downs across the two days.
