Fairlands Valley Spartans won both the men's and women's race at round three of the Midweek Road Race League - but it couldn't have been any closer.

Both groups in Division Two were decided by a single point, equating to one race position, ahead of host club Royston Runners.

Spartans were helped by a turnout of 57 runners, 31 men and 26 women.

Andrew Patterson (fifth), Simon Fraser (sixth) and Simon Jackson (eighth) were top 10 in the men's event, with Jonathan Parr just outside in 12th, while Samantha Pretty-Connors (second), Ashley Johnson (fourth) and Christine Lathwell (ninth) were the top three FVS females.

Overall, Spartans are third after the three rounds behind Watford Joggers and Royston.

In Division Three, Hitchin Running Club were second overall with Stevenage Striders in third and Stevenage & North Herts Athletics Club in ninth.

Round four for both divisions is at Trent Park on June 29 with the mob match, all three divisions together, coming on July 12 in Welwyn Garden City.

There were 30 Spartans at 15 different parkruns at the weekend.

Gail Mackie ran her 100th parkrun at Stevenage where Grant Ramsay was sixth.

Two teams from North Herts Road Runners tackled demanding terrain at the Greensand Ridge Relay, a 34-mile, six-stage event starting in Leighton Buzzard and finishing in Northill, Bedfordshire.

The Faster Squirrels team were third in the mixed category with a combined time of four hours 22 minutes 23 seconds, all that in spite of losing a handful of minutes due to "navigational mishaps" through Maulden Wood.

However, a time of 1:01:53 over the 9.1-mile third leg by team captain Katie Harbon pulled them through.

She was backed by Paula Holm, Ben Ryan, James Walsh, Astrid and Steve McKeown.

The second team from North Herts, the Fast Squirrels, finished in 5:12:20.

Jo Harbon, Michael Over, Richard Baker, Richard Harbon, Sue Vaughan and Matt Ankers made up their line-up.

Other Squirrels were in North Wales for the Salomon Trail Marathon Wales.

Jennie Fraser and Andy Grudzinski attempting and completed the full 26.2 mile challenge and were greeted at the finish line by club-mates Paul Bowal, Kat Burr and Adam Wilson who did the half-marathon version.

Five from the Stevenage Phoenix club took part in the Triffic Trail 10k at Trent Park.

First home was Ian Harvey in 48:19, followed closely by Jay Papa (49:12) and Andrew Liddle (54:58), all ahead of Jodie Kantas and Emma Mead who finished together in 57:18.

Eleanor Williams completed the second 50k section of the Race to the King off road ultra series.

She came home in 10:48:37 after a route which started and finished at Goodward Racecourse and travelled along the South Downs to pass Arundel Castle.

Twelve Phoenicians took part in a parkrun at seven different venues while the club also welcomed a new member, Milly Ester.
