There was a double promotion to be celebrated at Stevenage Hockey Club - even if the ladies of the third team couldn't add the title to their elevation.

They had the chance too in a winner-takes-all clash at the Nobel School against rivals Welwyn Garden City.

The pair had gone toe-to-toe throughout the East League Division Four South West season, both remaining unbeaten until the penultimate weekend when Stevenage fell to defeat at Blueharts.

That handed the advantage to WGC who knew a draw would be enough in the final game.

They went one better though as goals from Dan Irwin and Hannah Morgan gave them a 2-1 success.

They had dominated the first half and turned round 1-0 in front but Stevenage fought back after the break to level.

Welwyn then saw a penalty stroke saved but more pressure brought a winner and started the celebrations.

Stevenage's second place though does send them up and allow them to renew their rivalry next season.

The men's first team also gained promotion from Division Two South West, despite not playing.

Third-placed Bedford and St Albans in fourth knew a win for either would send them up.

However, the 4-4 draw meant Stevenage held on to second and secured the prize.
