Special Easter runs focused the attention for clubs across north Hertfordshire.

Peter Monk of the Stevenage Striders celebrated a landmark achievement of completing 100 official half marathons when he ran at Walton on Thames.

His half came in 2014 at Reading while 83 of the events have come in less than three years.

He was joined by a good squad from the club who either ran the 13.1-mile distance or a 10 mile race.

Ian McClements was in the latter, exactly one year after a double hip replacement.

Around 700 in total were at the Easter 10k in St Albans on Good Friday with two Striders.

Jennifer Graham and Vicky Walker-Nolan clocked 56 minutes 22 seconds while Jennifer Graham managed 1:16:43.

There were also seven from Fairlands Valley Spartans among the field with it being an especially good Friday for Nick Gill.

He went under 40 minutes for the first time, clocking a PB of 38:10 to finish 34th overall.

That took almost three minutes off his previous best while Jane Wadey improved her 10k personal best by one second.

Her time of 1:05:02 was just as gratefully received though.

Matthew Newton, Jim Brown, Liz Carvell, Nichola Durrant and Nicola Hatherly were the other from the club to take part.

Yuko Gordon meanwhile set a new national record for women aged 70 and over when she clocked 1:14:20 at the Maidenhead 10-mile race.

That was her gun time, used in an official capacity, although her chip time was 12 seconds quicker.

The previous record had been set in 2017 by Angela Copson.

One from North Herts Road Runners was also present in Berkshire, Linda Aird returning to the scene of her best 10-mile time, set in 2011.

A repeat may not have been on the cards after "12 years and plenty of injuries" but she was still delighted to come home in 1:32:39, 10 minutes off that PB.

Anna Greetham had to "battle the elements" as well as the course at the Easter 10k Coastal Road Race in Guernsey but she finished in 49:08 while Elwyn Howell completed two races in Devon, celebrating his birthday with a 21:31 finish at the Teignmouth Parkrun on Easter Saturday before clocking 45:43 at Yeovilton’s Easter Bunny 10k on Monday.

Closer to home, Sheila Leavy completed her first parkrun since a hip operation, finishing in 43:10 at Stevenage.

The Squirrels had two winners up the road at Letchworth Parkrun, Tom Webb and Katie Harbon clocking 18.02 and 19.07 respectively.

Stevenage Phoenix had a winner at the Oakley 20, Paul Smith clocking a PB of 2:51:02 to cross the line first.

The club also held round one of six in their 2023 Handicap 5k Series.

Using an out and back route along Gunnels Wood Road, each runner is given a target time based on current form and recent racing.

They then start in handicap order with the race winner being the runner who beats their target time by the greatest margin.

The first runner home and winner of the race was Katie Barnard, beating her target by over eight minutes in a time of 28:59.

She was followed by Jon Boe (29:02) and Steve Wood (33:26), all three graduates of the club's foundation programme.

A total of 25 runners completed the 5k with Jodie Kantas the fastest lady in 23:30 and Peter Tungate the quickest man in 21:18.
