Hitchin Town suffered penalty agony as they were beaten by Berkhamsted in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup.
The sides had finished level at 2-2 after 90 minutes at Cheshunt's Theobolds Lane, taking the contest in a shoot-out.
But after Jack Snelus and Ashley Hay scored, Finley Wilkinson hit the crossbar and then Layne Eadie had his effort saved by Cameron Groom.
It left Berko captain Ryan Kinnane to follow in the footsteps of team-mates Bradley Wadkins, Ben Walster and Ryan Blake and beat Charlie Horlock from 12 yards to give the Southern League Division One Central champions-elect the crown.
The Comrades are expected to confirm both the championship and promotion on Saturday when they host Kidlington, a draw would be enough, and that would likely put them back into the path of the Canaries next season in a league game.
If this final is anything to go by, that should mean two exciting games.
Luke Andrews had put Berko in front on 12 minutes from a corner but Hitchin equalised 17 minutes later with a flicked header from Wilkinson after a superb Eadie cross.
The Comrades were hanging on by the time the half-time whistle blew but they were ahead again five minutes after the interval, Walster driving one on from 20 yards.
Hitchin responded quickly and levelled again through Snelus before enjoying the better of the pressure for the remainder of the match.
However, they couldn't score and that led to the disappointment at the end.
