Stevenage skipper Carl Piergianni is among the nominees for League Two player of the month for December.

The 30-year-old has been in sparkling form for Stevenage since signing from Oldham Athletic in the summer.

December ended with him among the goals as well, with a double securing the three points against Crawley Town on December 30.

When announcing the nominees, the EFL said: "A throwback, Piergianni just loves an aerial duel.

"The heart of a Stevenage defence which conceded only one goal in four games, he was superb in the 0-0 draw at leaders Orient and then scored two headers in the win over Crawley."

He is up against three others, all strikers.

Luke Armstrong of Harrogate Town managed four goals in three games and his "assured calmness in front of goal continues to pull Harrogate away from the League Two relegation zone".

Salford City's Matt Smith also managed four in three, with a hat-trick in their win at Grimsby.

The final player in the frame is Kyle Wootton of Stockport County.

The EFL said: "The 26-year-old has had to take the long road to becoming an EFL starter, but is drawing the reward for his persistence and patience.

"He burst into life in December with braces at Hartlepool and Walsall, part of his four-goal haul in three games."
