County selection brought smiles to two North Herts Road Runners - as they represented Hertfordshire at the inter-counties 10k at Brighton.

And when the smiles were replaced by their game faces, Katie Harbon and Stuart Overton were able to put in stellar performances.

A time of 36 minutes 13 seconds was not only a new PB for Harbon but also took her to ninth place in the female race, as well as helping Herts to a silver medal in the team event.

He said: "Conditions cleared for us to run in dry conditions under sunshine although the coastal winds made for a tough second half."

Other Squirrels heading in the other direction to take on the St Neots Half Marathon.

They had four in the field of 844 who completed an undulating figure of eight course.

Richard Barker was the first of them to finish in 1:46:33, just in front of Laura Fairbanks whose time of 1:47:59 was well inside her 1:52 target.

Anna Gibson also dipped under two hours, clocking 1:57:20, but unfortunately injury put pay to Dave Braybrook's race, forcing him out after a couple of miles.

Pete Smith of Fairlands Valley Spartans was also at St Neots, finishing third in the V60 group with a time of 1:38:05.

There were two fantastic PBs for Spartans at the Gosport Half Marathon.

Steve Dobner and Dave Pattman ran different races but entered the home straight together, pushing each other on to finish in 1:41:41 and 1:41:44 respectively.

That took more than five minutes off Dobner's best while Pattman improved his time by two minutes.

Ex-Spartan Ed Hare finished in 1:44:53, his second best time for the distance, while Sam Pretty clocked 1:35:03.
