Steve Evans hailed his "men" after a not-so-pretty victory at Doncaster Rovers.

Jordan Roberts scored the only goal midway through the first half in a 1-0 win that wasn't straight forward at all.

The win though was all important to the boss after Saturday's loss to Northampton Town.

"This group are tremendous," he said. "They have that bouncebackability don’t they?

"It was harsh to lose a great game on Saturday and Jon Brady took the time to ring me [on Monday night] and we had a good hour on the phone, spoke about our little tiff and what goes on, and he said that it was two teams full of men.

"And we had to be men tonight.

"We changed it up a little bit but for 25 minutes we were at a different level.

"We were really good, we had a game plan and we dominated territorially and on the ball.

"They have some good players so they were going to have periods when they were bright but I’d have been surprised if Taye concedes any of those chances, apart from the boy missing with a header with five minutes to go.

"But saying that we should have gone two-up just before half-time.

"It’s a fantastic reaction from a fantastic group of men.

"We’ll play a lot better, I thought we played a lot better on Saturday, but we got three points and that was the aim."

The boss had sprung a surprise by naming Carl Piergianni on the bench but said he was a perfect example of a professional.

Evans said: "It was a big decision to keep Carl out but he just looked a bit tired in training yesterday.

"He knew it was a big decision and he knew what it meant to the group but he went round man to man before the game and he is a real Steve Evans’ character.

"And it was great to bring him on and he gave us a solid base."
