Stevenage manager Steve Evans has labelled Terence Vancooten his "quiet assassin" after naming the defender as captain.
The 24-year-old was handed the armband for the Papa John's Trophy game with Tottenham Hotspur U21 in the absence of regular skipper Carl Piergianni.
And despite being the longest serving member of the Boro squad, there were still one or two eyebrows raised at the decision.
Evans though felt it was a natural choice.
The boss said: "We mixed it up earlier in this competition and we sat there [before the game] and said who is the natural leader Is it Bozzie [Michael Bostwick]? Is it someone else?
"Terence is a big character around the place. I would call him the quiet assassin but he’s a big presence in our dressing room and has a positive character.
"He delivers performances but keeps under the radar. If other played like him, they would be shouting about it.
"We picked a different type of skipper to what Carl gives us."
