I’m not sure that even the most optimistic of our supporters could have predicted last Saturday’s score line.

Swindon Town, with the best away record in the whole of League 2, had only conceded nine goals during their 10 league matches away from the County Ground this season.

But the FA Cup was again to prove that the form book can be ripped up when it comes to the magic of that competition.

Ok, we still can’t defend set pieces, but five goals with two of them worthy of goal of the month isn’t bad.

Some might say that Boro’s performance was on the cards but, in reality, nothing over the course of the past two months gave any indication of the final result. Sure, we’d created a number of chances at Cambridge, but our overall display in that game was worthy of a narrow win at the very best.

Isn’t it funny how quickly a bubble can be burst though?

Just over 48 hours later and the 3rd Round draw, pitting us at home to Reading, seemed to be greeted with collective groans of disappointment.

Perhaps it’s a testimony to just how far we have come as a club that a home draw against a Championship side is considered to be such an anti-climax.

Perhaps it’s also the fact that this will be our third meeting with the Berkshire club in eight seasons in the FA Cup; the last – our dominant display and win at the Madejski in early 2012 – being the catalyst for Graham Westley to move on to bigger things.

It’s back to the league this weekend, with a strong Wycombe Wanderers side being the visitors to Broadhall Way.

With no wins in the last six league games, and with just five points out of 27 on offer, Stevenage’s form during October and November hasn’t been the best.

Back in February, the Boro overwhelmed Wycombe 3-0 at The Lamex during our ‘purple patch’, when we were firing on all cylinders as a unit, winning nine matches out of 11. While Saturday’s win will give the players renewed confidence, it might be wise for Darren Sarll to show his squad a replay of that match to show them just how good they can be.
