They have eight games to go and the 2-2 draw for Hitchin Town at home to play-off chasing Peterborough Sports was not only a valuable point in their battle to avoid relegation, it was also thoroughly deserved.

But which of the hometown heroes shone brighter than the others? This is how I saw Hitchin Town in the Southern League Premier Division Central game at Top Field.

Charlie Horlock - 7

The problems with the goal were in front of him and nothing to do with the keeper. What he did have to contend with, he did very well, producing a couple of smart saves.

Stanley Georgiou - 8

Really impressed me with his work-rate and tenacity. Was up and own that right flank all day, tackling one minute and linking up the attacking options the next.

Alex Brown - 6

Quiet in comparison to his fellow wing-back on the opposite flank but still had his moments in both defence and attack.

Stephen Gleeson - 8

Doesn't normally play centre-half apparently. The answer to that is why not? Composed for the most part and put himself about when needed. Looks a natural in the position.

Daniel Webb - 7

The defence were accountable for the two Peterborough goals but the skipper pushed his team-mates on in the second half with a couple of good tackles.

Ciaren Jones - 6

Caught out once or twice but used the fact there were two other centre-halves alongside him to get forward to good effect from time to time.

Joshua Coldicott-Stevens - 7

A proper Scrappy-Doo performance. Picked up a booking late on but for the amount of tackles he was involved with, that wasn't too much of a surprise. Won the majority too. Fine effort.

Lewis Barker - 6

Took a bang in the first half and never seemed to be in the flow of the game after that. Had looked bright early on too.

Jacob Hutchinson - 8

Took his two chances superbly well and in this form, he is proving to be the signing of the season for Hitchin. If there was one criticism it was he and strike partner Steve Cawley seemed too far apart at times but that could have been the plan.

Stephen Cawley - 6

Epitomised the Hitchin effort as he ran and ran until he couldn't run no more. One big chance in the second half that he will think he should have done better with.

Malaki Black - 6

Needs to start imposing himself on games a bit more because there is a player in there. Bit too quiet today though.

Substitutes

None made as Mark Burke didn't want to disrupt the flow of things.

Summary

A deserved point and there was enough fighting spirit in the display to make you believe Hitchin will be safe this season.

This was almost a bonus point against a side at the top end of the table but it is one that they should use to drive themselves forward.

There are big games to come and they will need to be at least this good in all of them.
